About Hill Country Rifles
Who is Hill Country Rifles and how long have we been building custom rifles?

Hill Country Rifles was founded in 1996 by Dave and Matt right here in New Braunfels, Texas. From day one, we built the company around what we actually wanted as customers: honest professional service, premium-quality components, and verified results — not just promises. Almost 30 years later, those values still drive every rifle we build.

What makes HCR different from other custom rifle builders?

The short answer: we prove it. Every rifle we build is test-fired in our 100-yard underground range by our team before it leaves our shop. You receive the actual targets with your rifle so you know exactly how it shoots and which factory ammunition it prefers — no guesswork, no costly custom loads or range testing on your end.

Can I visit the showroom in person?

Absolutely. We're located at 5726 Safari Dr, New Braunfels, TX 78132. Walk-in hours are Monday–Thursday, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM. Friday visits require an appointment; we're closed Saturday and Sunday. You can schedule a showroom appointment through our website at any time.

What rifle models does HCR offer?

Check out our Rifle Line Up Breakdown for details about our rifle models. We build across several lines to fit different goals and budgets:

  • Custom Series — Carbon Rifleman, Carbon Hunter, Long Range Hunter, Short Stuff, Long Range Tactical, Traditional, Carbon Safari, Safari Rifle, and Platinum Genesis
  • Specter Works — our specialty tactical line, including the Fatal Folder 338 ARC and the Shadowstrike Ti7
  • Pathfinder Series — a mini-chassis platform built on 30 years of expertise at a more accessible price
  • Harvester Series — a proven, budget-friendly entry point that still includes HCR's full testing process

Showroom rifles are available now online and in store. Build-to-order rifles can be configured through our Build to Order Form or in the showroom.

Ordering a Custom Rifle
How do I order a build-to-order custom rifle?

This is the fun stuff! There are several options to start a new build with us. You can fill out our Build to Order Form on our website, where you'll select your model, caliber, barrel length, etc. Or, you are welcome to speak with our sales team over the phone, emal, or by visiting us in the showroom. Either way, our team is here to help answer questions and go over the details for your next Hill Country Rifle.

How long does it take to build a custom rifle?

Lead time for build-to-order rifles is typically 4-6 months. Build times vary depending on the series, component availability, and current shop volume. We'll give you a realistic timeline when your order is placed and keep you updated throughout the process. If you need a rifle for a specific hunt date, let us know when placing your order and we'll do our best to accommodate.

If your timeline is tight, we have several finished rifles listed under our Ready to Ship section that are available immediately.

Can I customize the stock and color finish?

Yes! We offer a wide range of custom stock colors and patterns, including our popular HCR Mirage and Web patterns. A full gallery of color options is available on our website under the Build to Order section. If you have a specific pattern in mind, reach out and we'll make it happen.

Are left-handed rifles available?

Yes — we offer left-hand configurations across several of our series. Visit the "Left Hand" section on our website to see currently available left-hand options, or contact us to discuss a left-hand build-to-order.

Which rifles are available for online purchase?

All of our Showroom Rifles are available for online purchase and shipment to an FFL Dealer near you. You must be 21 years or older to purchase a rifle or ammunition from our Showroom or online on our website.

Accuracy Guarantee
What is the HCR accuracy guarantee?

Our Accuracy guarantee is verified for you. Our Custom, Showroom and Pathfinder rifles are guaranteed to shoot 3-shot, 1/2″ or better groups, at 100 yards with recommended factory ammunition in most calibers. You will get the targets that show the actual groups from your rifle, shot off a bench on a simple front and rear bag rest. You do not have to hand load. You do not have to buy custom ammo from us. Even if you are going to reload, a rifle that shoots 1/2″ groups with factory ammunition will make your reloading work much easier.

Our Tikka Harvester Rifles go through the same testing and are guaranteed to shoot 3-shot 1" or better groups at 100 yards. Targets and factory load data are also included.

Warranty & Returns
Is the HCR warranty transferable if I sell my rifle?

Yes. All HCR warranties are fully transferable to subsequent owners, as long as the barrel is in good condition and the firearm is well maintained and in good working order.

What voids my warranty?

Any gunsmithing or modifications performed outside of HCR may void your warranty. The warranty also does not cover:

Scope failures (the most common cause of accuracy loss)
Damage from improper cleaning or incorrect use of solvents
Loose action screws, scope base or ring screws, or improper magazine alignment
Reassembly errors after the owner or a third party has disassembled the rifle
Failure to use the recommended ammunition
Before sending a rifle in for a warranty claim, please check our Troubleshooting List — many common issues can be resolved without a return.

Who pays for shipping on a warranty repair?

The owner is responsible for return shipping and insurance when sending the rifle to us. If the issue is covered under warranty, HCR covers return shipping back to you at no charge. If the problem is determined to be outside of warranty coverage (scope failure, owner maintenance issues, etc.), all shipping and repair costs are the owner's responsibility.

What is your return policy on non-rifle items?

Most items may be returned within ten days of delivery with the original receipt. Unopened items in new condition receive a full refund. Opened items in new condition are subject to a 15% restocking fee and must include all original packaging, manuals, warranty cards, and accessories. Items must not have been registered.

The following items are non-returnable under any circumstances:

  • Optics that have been mounted to a firearm
-Rifle purchases (covered by HCR's warranty instead)
  • Ammunition
  • Sale items (final sale)
Shipping & Delivery
How are rifles shipped?

All rifle purchases ship via UPS to a verified FFL (Federal Firearms License) dealer that you select during checkout. We cannot ship firearms directly to a private address, P.O. Box, or to an International address. Your FFL dealer will handle the required form 4473 transfer paperwork when you pick up your rifle.
Our rifles ship in a box and case via UPS ground. Shipping and insurance is added to your final invoice. UPS Next day and Second day Air is available upon request.

How do I ship a rifle to HCR for Service?

Please review our How to Ship page before sending a firearm to us. Before shipping your rifle to Hill Country Rifles, you must have a pending work order for one of our services. This ensures that your firearm is properly logged, tracked, and received by our team upon arrival. Please contact us in advance to set up your work order before sending your rifle. Hill Country Rifles does not accept FFL transfers. We only receive firearms for service, repair, or customization that have an approved work order on file. Contact us or submit a Rifle Service Request Form first so we can track your incoming rifle and prepare accordingly.

Does HCR accept FFL Transfers?

Hill Country Rifles does not accept FFL transfers. We only receive firearms for service, repair, or customization that have an approved work order on file.

Rifle Services
What rifle models does HCR service?

HCR repairs, upgrades, and will work with bolt action, center-fire rifles only. Please see our Rifle Services page for the specific actions we are able to service.

Can HCR re-barrel or Upgrade a rifle I already own?

Yes. We offer threading, muzzle device install and re-barreling services. Whether you want to rechamber to a new caliber, replace a worn barrel, or upgrade to a premium carbon fiber barrel, we can help. See our Barrel Work page or submit a Rifle Service Request Form on our website to get started, and we'll reach out to discuss your options.

What is the Rebuild Package?

The Rebuild Package is one of our most popular services. We take your existing bolt-action rifle, strip it down, and rebuild it with a new premium barrel, pillars, and a full glass bedding job — then test and verify accuracy just like a new build. It's an excellent way to transform a factory rifle into a semi-custom rifle without the cost of a new build. Details are on the Rebuild Package page.

Do you offer sight-in and range services?

Yes. We offer sight-in services for most bolt action center-fire rifles in our 100-yard underground range. If you've purchased a new scope or need your rifle zeroed before a hunt, we can take care of that for you. Contact us or submit a service request to schedule.

Optics
What optics brands does HCR carry?

We are an authorized dealer for Swarovski, Kahles, Trijicon and Nightforce. We also carry binoculars, rangefinders, and spotting scopes. Free UPS Ground shipping applies to all optics orders.

Can I add an optic to my rifle build?

Absolutely. When building a custom rifle, we can mount and sight in your scope as part of the build process — and it'll be on your rifle when we do our accuracy testing, so the targets you receive reflect a complete, ready-to-hunt setup. Custom turrets and other accessories are also available. Ask us about optic choices when placing your order.

Can I return a scope after it has been mounted?

No. Optics that have been mounted to a firearm are non-returnable. This is standard industry policy. If you have questions about a specific scope before purchasing, please call us — we're happy to help you make the right choice before it's mounted.
